CBD and measuring progress towards the 2020 Aichi Targets

In October 2010, signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, with a new set of targets known as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. National Red Lists can be used as a valuable tool to assist nations in measuring progress towards the 2020 Aichi Targets, specifically Target 12.

National and regional Red Lists are an essential tool in:

Informing the development of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) – establishing a baseline measure of the status of biodiversity, from which the causes of biodiversity loss can be identified and conservation priorities can be established.
Informing 2011-2020 Strategic Plan’s mission and progress achieved towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets – by enabling the development of Red List indices, to highlight the overall trends in the status of species and to track progress towards halting biodiversity loss.
