A limitation of a national-level RLI is that, if it is disaggregated into subsets that are too small and with too few taxa driving trends, these trends can be difficult to interpret and may be less useful as indicators.

The RLI alone is also relatively slow to change and therefore difficult to incorporate into short-term political cycles. Globally, the index for birds is updated every 4-6 years (Butchart et al. 2004), but in Australia for example, assessments have been at 10-year intervals. Overall, the number of genuine changes over these time periods is often very small.
