On Monday 25 October Dr Jonathan Baillie, Director of Conservation Programmes at ZSL and Dr. John Donaldson, Chief Director of Applied Biodiversity Research at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) addressed an audience at a side event of COP10 of the CBD in Nagoya, Japan entitled “National Red Lists – Challenges and Opportunities”. The event introduced National Red Lists, discussed their use in national-level conservation planning, reviewed what they have told us so far about biodiversity change and identified the major taxonomic and geographical gaps in National Red Lists produced globally.
Speakers involved with Red Listing in Asia and South America discussed their National Red Lists as case studies, including their motives for producing the list, the organisations involved, how the assessments were conducted, how the information was utilised and presented, how the information will be periodically updated, and finally any challenges encountered during the compilation of the National Red List.
